Home defense is something we should all consider from time to time, especially now considering the state of the world.
With unrest in the streets and potential shortages threatening to bring aggressors to our door, locking and loading your home to protect your family and property couldn’t be more important.
One of the biggest decisions you can make is which firearm you rely on in any potential home defense situation.
Today, we pull the trigger on some things you should consider, and outline which firearms will serve you best:
What Makes a Good Firearm for Home Defense?
While all kinds of their purpose, only certain firearms are good choices for home defense.
You’ll need a firearm that has enough stopping power to take care of any attacker, but also one that isn’t so large that it’s unwieldy in any confined quarters.
A rifle, for example, is usually a poor choice for home defense since these firearms are usually too bulky and unwieldy, not to mention take longer to load.
With this in mind, it’s clear that pistols and a few shotguns are ideal choices for home defense purposes.
Both types of weapons can be loaded quickly and used in close quarters. Plus, both can also provide plenty of stopping power, depending on the cartridge type you choose.

Now, let’s take a look at some specific firearms for home defense:
3. The Glock 19
The Glock 19 or G 19 is one of the best picks overall. It’s a little smaller than the original Glock 17, making it a particularly good pick if you’re smaller than average or a woman.
It also has a slightly shorter barrel, which is an advantage when you don’t want your gun to be caught on anything if you have to draw it quickly.
Since it's only 9 mm, it produces recoil that's very easy to manage and keep on target. We'd heavily recommend this as a great concealed carry pistol for day-to-day self-defense, as well.
2. The Ruger GP100
Another good pick is the Ruger GP100: a revolver chambered for .357 Magnum cartridges.
Since it only features a 4-inch barrel, it's a great choice for home defense as it won't be difficult to use in even the most confined circumstances or quarters.
Plus, revolvers are inherently easy to use. Many consider them to be more reliable compared to magazine-fed semiautomatic pistols. Revolvers are quick and easy to get the hang of and load, even in a tense situation.
Again, this pistol may be a good choice for general self-defense or concealed carrying in addition to home defense.
1. The Mossberg 500
Last but not least is this capable shotgun model.
The Mossberg 500 is a 12-gauge, pump-action shotgun that's especially reliable and devastating when used within its intended range.
You can get Mossbergs for either buckshot or slugs, but buckshot is preferred for home defense.
As an added bonus, the pumping sound from readying your shotgun is often enough to scare away any intruders.
However, keep in mind that shotguns like this one do provide some kick, so be sure you can control this firearm before relying on it for home defense.
All in all, each of these firearms could be a perfect pick for your home defense needs. Be sure to try them out or test them at a gun range before making them your primary self-defense firearm, however.
Thank you for reading, stay strong patriots.
